Sammilita Islami Bank Commences Depositor Refunds Under Central Bank Supervision

Sammilita Islami Bank PLC has officially begun disbursing funds to its depositors, marking a pivotal moment in the state-backed effort to stabilize Bangladesh’s Shariah-compliant banking domain. Under the structured framework, customers who lodged withdrawal applications on or before 1 September are being paid out. Depositors who registered their requests after this initial cut-off are being asked to adhere strictly to a chronological sequence, awaiting their designated collection dates based on when their forms were submitted.

To prevent disruption and long queues, central management has dispatched adequate cash reserves across the branch network. Whilst standard protocol requires rigid adherence to assigned dates, branch managers have been granted limited discretionary power to accommodate genuine personal emergencies. At the Nayapalton branch—formerly operated under Global Islami Bank—a mother who had applied on 3 September was permitted an immediate withdrawal of Tk 20,000 after explaining that her child required urgent medical care.

For routine withdrawals, however, no exceptions are being made. Another client visiting the same branch, who had likewise submitted an application on 3 September, was advised that he must wait a further two days before his funds could be released. Bank representatives noted that despite minor frustration amongst customers eager for immediate liquidity, maintaining order through a date-bound queueing system is crucial to managing branch workflow and ensuring fair access.

Reimbursing funds involves a strict three-tier processing model comprising application review, credit checking, and final cash disbursement. Before releasing any capital, bank personnel utilize a dedicated digital platform to check whether the applicant holds non-performing Shariah financing or defaulted debt across any of the five constituent institutions merged into Sammilita Islami Bank PLC. Money is only cleared for disbursement if the applicant’s credit record across the unified system shows no outstanding defaults.

The entire operational framework remains under the active oversight of Bangladesh Bank. Sammilita Islami Bank PLC was formed via the consolidation of five Shariah-based lenders—First Security Islami Bank, Social Islami Bank, Union Bank, Global Islami Bank, and EXIM Bank—which experienced acute liquidity shortages and high levels of non-performing loans.

With government control firmly established and central bank monitoring in place, officials have advised depositors to remain calm and avoid panic withdrawals, reassuring the public that customer balances are fully safeguarded under the official restructuring roadmap.
