The Ministry of Finance has promoted Md. Anisur Rahman to the position of Deputy Governor at Bangladesh Bank. Currently serving as an Executive Director within the institution, his new appointment is on a contractual basis for a fixed term of three years, structured to maintain leadership continuity at the apex monetary authority.
The formal directive was circulated on Monday afternoon by the Central Bank-1 Branch of the Financial Institutions Division. Issued by order of the President, the gazette notification was authorised by Senior Assistant Secretary Md. Shafi Ullah, requiring the administrative change to take effect without delay.
Statutory Conditions and Legal Alignment
The promotion has been processed under Article 10(4) of the Bangladesh Bank Order, 1972. To satisfy the official criteria for this senior executive role, specific adjustments have been made to Rahman’s employment status. He will take voluntary retirement from his current permanent position as Executive Director, alongside a formal suspension of his scheduled post-retirement leave (PRL).
His three-year tenure will officially commence from the day he formally assumes his new responsibilities at the central bank’s headquarters in Dhaka. The Ministry of Finance has indicated that this transition is to be completed immediately to avoid any administrative vacancies within the bank’s core leadership panel.
Regulatory Oversight and Fiscal Priorities
Stepping into the role of Deputy Governor, Rahman joins a small group of senior policymakers responsible for managing monetary policy, tracking foreign exchange reserves, and maintaining liquidity across the financial sector. This appointment occurs at a time when Bangladesh Bank is actively updating its commercial banking oversight, focusing heavily on improving governance, tightening credit risk guidelines, and addressing the volume of non-performing loans across commercial institutions.
The portfolio of a Deputy Governor includes the direct supervision of multiple key departments, ranging from currency management and financial surveillance to banking regulations. Having spent years within the institution’s executive tier, Rahman’s move to the upper echelon is expected to offer vital continuity to the bank’s current regulatory programmes. His experience will be relied upon as the central bank works to manage domestic inflationary pressures and maintain stability across the broader financial landscape.
