British American Tobacco Bangladesh Company (BATBC) recorded a marked improvement in its business performance during the second quarter of the current year, with both cigarette sales and profit after tax rising compared with the same period a year earlier.
The company’s performance was particularly strong in terms of profitability. However, the improvement in the April-June quarter was not enough to lift its overall first-half results, as sales and profit for the six months to June remained marginally below the corresponding period of the previous year.
The figures were disclosed in the half-yearly financial report of the publicly listed company. The report was finalised at a recent meeting of the company’s board of directors, after which a summary of the financial results was released to investors through the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE).
According to the financial statements, BATBC generated cigarette sales worth Tk14,563 crore in the second quarter, covering April to June. The figure stood at Tk13,885 crore in the same quarter of the previous year. This represents an increase of Tk678 crore, or nearly 5 per cent, year on year.
The company also achieved a substantial improvement in its bottom line during the quarter. Profit after tax rose to Tk204 crore from Tk97 crore in the corresponding three-month period a year earlier. The increase amounted to Tk107 crore, meaning quarterly profit more than doubled over the year.
The sharp rise in quarterly profit, despite a relatively moderate increase in sales, indicates that factors beyond revenue growth contributed to the improved result. Changes in the cost structure, pricing, product mix and operational performance can all influence the profitability of a tobacco manufacturer. However, the financial disclosure itself does not provide enough detail to attribute the increase to any single factor.
The broader six-month figures present a more subdued picture. From January to June, BATBC recorded cigarette sales of Tk23,288 crore, compared with Tk23,482 crore during the same period last year. Sales therefore declined by Tk194 crore in the first half.
Profit after tax also edged down slightly during the six-month period. The company reported profit of Tk413 crore for the first half of the current year, against Tk415 crore a year earlier, representing a modest decline of Tk2 crore.
One of the most significant aspects of BATBC’s financial performance is its contribution to government revenue. The tobacco sector remains an important source of tax collection in Bangladesh, with cigarette products subject to substantial supplementary duty and value-added tax (VAT).
During the first six months of the year, BATBC paid Tk19,457 crore to the government in supplementary duty and VAT related to cigarette sales. The corresponding figure for the same period of the previous year was Tk19,405 crore. This represents an increase of Tk52 crore in government revenue contribution.
The figures also highlight the importance of Bangladesh’s tobacco taxation structure to the financial performance of companies operating in the sector. Sales volumes, retail prices, supplementary duty, VAT rates, consumer purchasing power and changes in market demand can collectively affect both revenue and profitability. As a result, a strong performance in one quarter does not necessarily translate into stronger results for the full year.
The company’s financial results also appeared to receive a positive response from investors in the stock market. During the first two hours of trading in Dhaka, BATBC’s share price rose by Tk1.30 to Tk227. Around 137,000 shares changed hands during the period, with the total transaction value exceeding Tk3 crore.
The market movement suggests that at least some investors responded positively to the company’s improved second-quarter sales and profit figures. Share price movements, however, can also be influenced by broader market conditions, investor sentiment and company-specific expectations, making it difficult to attribute the rise solely to the latest financial results.
BATBC has been a long-standing listed company in Bangladesh’s capital market. It was listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange in 1977 and is currently categorised as an ‘A’ category company. Given its long presence in the market and the scale of its business, its financial disclosures are closely followed by investors.
Overall, BATBC’s April-June performance showed a clear acceleration in business momentum. Cigarette sales increased by nearly 5 per cent, while profit after tax more than doubled compared with the same quarter a year earlier. Yet the first-half figures remained slightly weaker, with both sales and profit recording marginal declines.
The performance of the remaining quarters will therefore be crucial in determining whether the company can sustain the second-quarter momentum and improve its full-year results. At the same time, developments in tobacco taxation, pricing, consumer demand and purchasing power are likely to remain important factors influencing the company’s financial performance in the months ahead.
