Bangladesh Issues Warning Against 31 Unauthorised Digital Loan Apps

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit has issued a stern public warning regarding 31 unauthorised mobile applications and digital platforms that lure citizens into high-risk borrowing traps under the guise of quick, hassle-free credit.

Operating largely through social media networks and independent applications, these entities target vulnerable consumers with promises of rapid financial relief. However, investigators found that once users download the software, the platforms harvest extensive private data, including mobile contact lists, photo galleries, and other sensitive personal files.

Authorities noted a troubling pattern of predatory behaviour once loans are disbursed. Fraudulent operators routinely subject borrowers to intense psychological pressure, public shaming tactics, and threats of leaking private data if repayments—often inflated with exorbitant, hidden fees—are delayed.

The financial intelligence agency stressed that lending money is a tightly regulated activity within the country. Under existing financial laws and central bank regulations, no individual or corporate entity possesses the legal right to disburse loans via mobile applications or digital platforms without explicit regulatory approval.

Beyond privacy violations and harassment, these unregulated channels expose the national financial ecosystem to severe security threats, including digital fraud, identity theft, and money laundering. Citizens have been specifically advised never to share National Identity cards, bank account credentials, personal photographs, or contact directories with unverified digital platforms.

The agency also highlighted a common red flag associated with these scams: demanding advance payments, registration charges, or processing fees before the loan is actually granted. Legitimate financial institutions do not require upfront payments to process standard credit applications.

Victims of such digital fraud, or anyone possessing actionable intelligence regarding these illegal networks, are encouraged to report the details directly to the financial watchdog. Under the prevailing Money Laundering Prevention Act, acquiring funds through deception and extortion remains a punishable criminal offence.

As digital financial services expand rapidly, regulatory bodies continue to monitor cyber syndicates exploiting consumer desperation. Authorities urge the public to exercise strict caution, verify institutional credentials through official central bank channels, and completely avoid unverified lending applications to protect their personal privacy and financial wellbeing.
